It is that time of year. The trees are nearly bare and the air is more than just crisp. This morning, it was down right cold. I love this time of year though. We get to bundle up on the couch after a long day, piled with blankets and covered in layers. As with spring, I prep my home for the new season. I clean everything as our windows have been open all spring and summer and invisible layers of dust has made itself at home amongst our things I am sure. The last thing I do after everything has been cleaned and our summer items have been stored for the season is wash all of our sheets, even those sitting in the closet, the blankets, and the covers. Every thing gets thrown in the wash and washed with Dreft. Yup, baby detergent. You see, I have sensitive skin. I break out in hives from scented detergents and my allergies act up so I use our children’s detergent for our linens.
When we first moved into our home, my mother in law insisted despite my warnings about my sensitive skin, that a capful of bleach, so that our linens smell fresh, is best. I warned her it wouldn’t end well and she brushed me off saying “it’s okay, it’s okay.” That is the equivalent of my husband’s response to any of my protests of “who cares? It’s fine.” It took several washes to get the “fresh” bleach smell out of my linens and for my hives and my headache to disappear. Then I had an idea, my husband and his mom love scents which is why they are so insistent on using harsh products to clean and I’m so sensitive but I do love the way my babies smell all oiled up after a warm bath. That scent never seems to get old for me. It was a happy medium. So, I used the same fresh smelling detergent I use for our children’s clothing and linens being that they make their way into our bed anyhow. Dreft comes with the scent of babyhood that is safe and hypoallergenic, perfect for delicate baby skin and my own sensitive skin. It is so gentle, it is no wonder they are the number one recommended brand amongst pediatricians. Now I can sit back and enjoy the warmth of my home and the fresh, clean scent of fall cleaning (my version of spring cleaning).
