Let me start by saying this whole house is in progress and not a single room is completed in full. We did want to at least start with our daughter’s room, which lacked not only storage but her fun and bright character. This is what we started with when we first moved in.
A full-size bed leaves no room to play but she needs it because she moves so much at night and would end up on the floor if she had a twin. The headboard was part of her convertible crib that never quite fit the full-size bed it claimed to be for and so the headboard banged the wall whenever she climbed in. The duvet cover was my idea and while she loved it, the duvet itself moved too much inside and made it hard for her to make her bed. Her dresser was a quick buy because we had nowhere to put her clothes as she started getting bigger but she was never big enough for the top drawers and the top served as a landing spot she could never reach anyhow. Shamefully, she lived in this room for almost two years as is. I wanted her to have a room she loved but I gave her too many options and it was all too much for her. I started to slowly give her ideas and once we decided what she needed and what she wanted, I narrowed down choices for her to choose from. So far, here is where we are:
Fun pieces now hang on her wall. A wall which is yet to be painted. She insists on 7 different colors though I’ve told her to narrow it down to 2.
This fan now sits on her full-size dresser. Her ceiling fan is gone but surprisingly, this gives off such a breeze.
A new place to hang her bags instead of on the door knobs.
Her fun new ceiling fixture.
A magazine rack now holds her soft cover books.
A bigger, lighter dresser that actually takes up less space.
We went with a day bed from Ikea and while it is still full size, it is against the wall, leaving a lot of room to play. We replaced the duvet with a Cynthia Rowley comforter set (came with sheets and the heart pillow) from Home Goods so there will be no shifting. The pillows were an old purchase Missoni for Target that never quite fit anywhere but I kept anyway, thankfully. The new light fixture is from World Market (on sale!) and replaced the ceiling ugly fan. She has a lot of storage now and several drawers sit empty, I am okay with that. We still need to change the baseboards and trim, doors etc. but for right now this is a good start. Hopefully, we can be done with this room in the summer but like I said, it is a progress and we also started on the boys’ room. Add this to that huge to-do list for 2017. Maybe we will finish in a few years.
