I’ve been trying not to overwhelm you with baby tales but the truth is that this has everything to do with self-care, a big focus for 2017. I could tell you that there isn’t much difference between two and three kids and I would be lying. It is hard. Everything changes especially when you spend your days nursing. It’s even harder when you struggle to pump like me and constantly have to watch what you eat, drink to not minimize your supply. It was a decision as parents we thought would be best, economically and as a bonding experience. In turn, my life revolved around school, nursing, potty training, nursing, naps, nursing, dinnertime, nursing, bath time, nursing, squeeze in some writing, nursing, sleep, nurse, sleep, nurse and before you knew it, I was burnt out and left with no time for me or for ourselves. As the year went on and the desire to get out of the house became overwhelming, we decided that for the sake of our sanity I needed to supplement. At first, he wouldn’t budge but slowly as we tried different options and he saw he had no choice since mommy and daddy were finally heading out a bit more, he gave in. It took a day or two really.
Then our evenings changed, he went from nursing several times a day to only 2 times and settling into a night time routine that became harder to break. He only fell asleep with a bottle, on his father’s lap and wanted nothing else but that. It reminded me of our first who only napped on his chest. We chose Plum Organics® Grow Well® Infant Formula because it was gentle and an easy transition. We, like Plum Organics, believe breast is best (for us personally) but life and parenting isn’t perfect and it’s okay to allow yourself some grace and a much-needed break. As long as he’s fed, nothing else matters.
As moms, we tend to forget ourselves as women or as half of a partnership, and when nursing takes over your entire life, forgetting comes easy. Lucky for us, supplementing was worth it. It allowed for more alone time, more freedom, to share the bonding experience with my partner, to sleep better and so on. Transitioning our baby to formula and then shortly there after into milk after the first year, whose first birthday happens to be today, was part of my 2017 self-care plan. I needed to focus on being more than just mom, I needed to be the woman who happens to be a mother because it makes me a better one.
How do you plan on focusing on self-care as a mom?
