This summer my birthday, earlier this month, was a little different for so many reasons. Because of an unexpected death in the family, my oldest took off to Texas with her father to attend the funeral while I stayed behind with the youngest two who would have never sat through the road trip. So on my birthday, my boys and I headed to Starbucks for my morning birthday cup and we spent the morning playing outside and enjoying the weather. I did eventually go out to dinner with my brother and his wife, and a Starbucks birthday cup redo and pedicures with my big girl. The weather the entire week was amazing and I realized something. My poor babies, with birthdays in January, February, and October, have never enjoyed a birthday outside like I have. So I decided to create a “play” birthday party in our yard one morning to celebrate all of our birthdays together, because why not create your own happy memories? In fact, we were so inspired by all the amazing American Greetings birthday cards we saw at Meijer, that we decided to create a few of our own as well.
Because it was just us, I got the kids balloons, animal balloons actually, that turned into a game of “zoo” and kept the decor to our usually outdoor stuff. Slow living calls for simple things, even during our “new” summer birthdays.
We actually didn’t do gifts but we picked out fun cards from American Greetings. If we are being honest, my oldest picked them all out for all of the fun summer birthdays we are invited to because it is ” ‘better to give than it is to receive’ -Said no birthday girl ever”. I laughed a bit much at that card. Truth is, I am a card giver. I like thoughtful words and funny messages, with a nice gift card attached of course. There is something sweet about words, they can uplift, heal, brighten up someone’s day.
But of course, no birthday is complete without cupcakes and in our case, minis.
We are pretty active outdoors, more so this summer than any other. So we played water games (hence my boys sporting just their swimming bottoms), created hats, chased bubbles, and wore ourselves out enough to all settle in for a nap after.
*In case American Greetings were hiring, my kids are talented. I am also super bias and unashamed.
Meijer has the perfect card for every child’s birthday – and fun decor for your own summer birthday (even if it isn’t really your birthday…)
